Decomposition rate depends on the chemical quality of the detritus, temperature, and soil moisture / oxygen availability.

Concept: Decomposition is the breakdown of detritus (dead organic matter) into inorganic nutrients by decomposers, through fragmentation, leaching, catabolism, humification and mineralisation. Its rate is controlled by both the material and the climate.
