Lanthanoid contraction is the gradual decrease in lanthanoid size across the series due to poor 4f4f shielding; it makes Zr and Hf nearly identical in size and lowers hydroxide basicity down the series.

Lanthanoid contraction: as we move across the lanthanoid series (from lanthanum, Z=57Z=57, to lutetium, Z=71Z=71), each successive element has one more proton in the nucleus and one more electron added to the inner 4f4f subshell. Because 4f4f electrons shield the nuclear charge very poorly, the effective nuclear charge felt by the outer electrons steadily increases. This pulls the electron cloud inward, so the atomic and ionic radii decrease regularly and gradually across the series. This steady contraction in size is called the lanthanoid contraction.

Two consequences:

  1. Similarity of 2nd and 3rd transition series: the contraction almost cancels the expected size increase from the 4th to the 5th period, so elements like zirconium (Zr) and hafnium (Hf), niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta), have nearly identical atomic radii and closely similar chemical properties (making them hard to separate). …
