Lanthanoid contraction = the regular decrease in size across the lanthanoids due to poor 4f4f shielding; it makes Zr/Hf pairs nearly identical and lanthanoids hard to separate.

Lanthanoid contraction. As we move across the lanthanoid series (from La to Lu), the atomic and ionic radii decrease steadily with increasing atomic number. The added electrons enter the inner 4f4f subshell, and because 4f4f electrons shield one another from the nuclear charge only poorly, the effective nuclear charge felt by the outer electrons increases progressively, pulling the electron cloud inward. This regular size contraction is the lanthanoid contraction.

Two consequences:

  1. Similarity of the 4d and 5d (2nd and 3rd) transition series: the contraction almost exactly offsets the expected size increase down the group, so pairs like Zr and Hf, Nb and Ta have nearly identical atomic radii and very similar chemical properties. …
