K2Cr2O7 is made from chromite ore via sodium chromate/dichromate and a KCl metathesis step; its colour arises from ligand-to-metal charge transfer since Cr(VI) has no d electrons.

a) Preparation of K2Cr2O7 from chromite ore

Step 1 — The powdered chromite ore (FeCr2O4) is fused with sodium/potassium carbonate in free access of air (or with an oxidising agent), converting the chromium to soluble sodium chromate and the iron to insoluble Fe2O3:

4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 → 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2

Step 2 — The fused mass is extracted with water; sodium chromate dissolves and is filtered from the insoluble Fe2O3. The yellow filtrate (sodium chromate solution) is acidified with sulphuric acid, converting the chromate into the orange dichromate:

2Na2CrO4 + 2H+ → Na2Cr2O7 + 2Na+ + H2O

Step 3 — The sodium dichromate solution is then treated with potassium chloride. Since potassium dichromate is less soluble than sodium dichromate, on cooling the solution, orange crystals of potassium dichromate separate out:

Na2Cr2O7 + 2KCl → K2Cr2O7↓ + 2NaCl

b) Colour of potassium dichromate
