Potassium dichromate is manufactured from chromite (FeCr2O4) via an oxidative alkaline fusion to sodium chromate, acidification to sodium dichromate, and finally metathesis with KCl.

Step 1: Oxidative fusion of chromite ore

Powdered chromite ore (FeCr2O4) is fused with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) in the presence of air (O2), which oxidises the chromium(III) in the ore to chromium(VI) as sodium chromate, while iron is oxidised to Fe2O3:

4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 --(fuse)--> 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2

The fused mass is extracted with water; the insoluble Fe2O3 is filtered off, leaving a yellow solution of sodium chromate.

Step 2: Conversion to sodium dichromate

The sodium chromate solution is acidified with sulphuric acid, converting the yellow chromate (CrO4²⁻) to the orange dichromate (Cr2O7²⁻):

2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 --> Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O
