Potassium dichromate is manufactured from chromite ore via sodium chromate, sodium dichromate, and finally displacement with KCl.

  1. Ore: Potassium dichromate is manufactured starting from Chromite ore, FeCr2O4 (iron chromite).
  2. Preparation from Sodium chromate: Chromite ore is first fused with sodium carbonate in the presence of air to give sodium chromate: 4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 → 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2 The resulting sodium chromate solution is filtered and acidified with sulphuric acid, converting the yellow chromate into the orange dichromate: 2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 → Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O The sodium dichromate solution is then treated with potassium chloride: Na2Cr2O7 + 2KCl → K2Cr2O7 + 2NaCl …
