Potassium dichromate is manufactured from chromite ore in three steps: fusion to sodium chromate, acidification to sodium dichromate, then conversion to potassium dichromate with KCl.

Step 1 -- Fusion (oxidative roasting) of chromite ore:

Finely powdered chromite ore, FeCr2O4, is fused with an excess of sodium/potassium carbonate in the presence of air (atmospheric oxygen) in a furnace. This converts the chromium(III) in the ore into the +6 state, giving yellow sodium chromate, while iron ends up as iron(III) oxide:

4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 -> 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2

Step 2 -- Acidification to sodium dichromate:

The fused mass is extracted with water; the solution (containing yellow sodium chromate, Na2CrO4) is filtered to remove insoluble iron(III) oxide, and the filtrate is then acidified with concentrated sulfuric acid. The yellow chromate ion (CrO4^2-) is converted to the orange dichromate ion (Cr2O7^2-):

2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 -> Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O

Step 3 -- Conversion to potassium dichromate: …
