Step 1. Chromosome-number constancy. Since mitosis is an equational division, it keeps the chromosome number of a cell exactly constant across successive cell generations.

Step 2. Equal distribution of content. It ensures that the nuclear and cytoplasmic contents — including the hereditary DNA — are shared equally, both quantitatively and qualitatively, between the two daughter cells.

Step 3. Growth and development. Because new cells are true genetic copies of their parent cell, mitosis is what drives the growth and development of a multicellular organism from a single zygote.
