Diagram description (based on Fig. 7.3, Metaphase): Draw an oval-shaped cell. At the two ends (poles) of the cell, mark the centrioles/asters from which the spindle fibres radiate. Draw the spindle fibres as lines converging from both poles toward the exact centre of the cell.

Along the centre of the cell, midway between the two poles, draw a single horizontal row of chromosomes — this row is the metaphase plate. Draw each chromosome as fully condensed and short, each clearly showing its two sister chromatids joined together at a single, prominent centromere. Show the spindle fibres from both poles attaching specifically to the centromere of every chromosome (this is what allows each centromere to later split so the chromatids can be pulled to opposite poles in anaphase). …
