Land only looks barren in the dry season because most of its plant life is present in a dormant, inconspicuous form rather than being absent altogether.

Step 1. What survives the dry period. Cryptogams reproduce by spores rather than seeds, and many of these spores (of algae, mosses, ferns) as well as the seeds of flowering plants and the underground rhizomes/rhizoids of Bryophytes and Pteridophytes remain viable in or on the soil through the dry months, even though no visible growth is happening.
