Funaria is the chapter's named example of a moss, showing both gametophyte and sporophyte generations attached to each other. To draw and label it:

Step 1. The gametophyte (main plant body). Draw an erect, slender stem-like main axis (the cauloid) bearing small, spirally arranged leaf-like structures (the phylloids) along its length. At the base, draw fine branched rhizoids anchoring the plant to the substrate.

Step 2. The attached sporophyte. From the tip of the gametophyte's main axis, draw the sporophyte growing out of it: a short foot embedded in the gametophyte tissue (through which it draws nutrition), a long, slender seta (stalk) rising upward from the foot, and, at the very top of the seta, a capsule — the spore-producing structure. …
