Step 2. Number of steps and rate. Respiration proceeds through many small, controlled steps (ten in glycolysis alone, several more through the Krebs cycle and ETC), releasing energy gradually. Combustion occurs in essentially one rapid step, releasing all of the substrate's energy at once.
