Q.A balloon is inflated with helium gas at room temperature of 25 degree C and at 1 bar pressure when its initial volume is 2.27L and allowed to rise in air. As it rises in the air external pressure decreases and the volume of the gas increases till finally it bursts when external pressure is 0.3bar. What is the limit at which volume of the balloon can stay inflated ?

Step 1. Given: P1 = 1 bar, V1 = 2.27 L (initial state); P2 = 0.3 bar (external pressure when the balloon bursts). Assuming temperature stays essentially constant during the rise, Boyle's law applies.

Step 2. By Boyle's law, P1V1 = P2V2, so V2 = P1V1/P2 = (1 bar x 2.27 L)/0.3 bar = 2.27/0.3 = 7.567 L.

Step 3. So the balloon can expand up to 7.567 L before the internal pressure has fallen (and the volume risen) enough that it bursts at the stated external pressure of 0.3 bar.

✓Final answer

V2 = 7.567 L.
