A geostationary (or geosynchronous) satellite is one placed in the Earth's EQUATORIAL plane, revolving in the SAME sense (west to east) as the Earth's own rotation, and with EXACTLY the same period of revolution as the Earth's rotation period, i.e. 24 hours (one day). Because the satellite completes one full orbit in exactly the time the Earth takes to complete one full rotation, it stays positioned over the same point on the equator at all times, and therefore appears completely STATIONARY when viewed from any fixed location on the Earth's surface.
