Newton's law of gravitation states: every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle of matter with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. In equation form, for two point masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 separated by distance r, F=Gm1m2r2F=\dfrac{Gm_1m_2}{r^2}, where G is the universal gravitational constant. This force is always ATTRACTIVE, acts along the straight line joining the two masses, and (by Newton's third law) the two mutual forces on the pair are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
