A progressive (or travelling) wave is one in which a disturbance created at one place keeps travelling onward to distant points of the medium, continuing to do so unless stopped by some external agency (a wall, boundary or obstacle) -- as opposed to a stationary wave, where the disturbance does not travel onward in this way.
