Step 1. The natural greenhouse effect is what keeps the Earth's average surface temperature at a habitable 15C, rather than the -18C it would be without any greenhouse gases at all -- in this sense it is essential and beneficial (a boon), since it makes life on Earth as we know it possible.

Step 2. However, human activities -- burning fossil fuels, deforestation, burning agricultural waste, and releasing gases like CO2, CH4 and CFCs -- have sharply increased the concentration of greenhouse gases beyond their natural levels, trapping more heat than the natural cycle intended.

Step 3. This human-enhanced greenhouse effect drives global warming, which has already raised global temperature by about 0.6C over the past century, mostly in the last three decades, and is linked to disruptive effects such as the El Nino cycle, melting polar and Himalayan ice, and a rising risk of coastal submergence -- in this excess form, the effect is clearly a bane. …
