Most marine fish are stenohaline, meaning they are physiologically adapted to a narrow salinity range close to that of the sea, and lack the osmoregulatory machinery needed to cope with a sharply different external salinity. Step 3. Placed in fresh water, a marine fish would face severe osmotic stress: water would tend to move into its body faster than it can be expelled, disrupting its internal salt/water balance.
