Step 1. Endotherms/Regulators: organisms capable of maintaining homeostasis -- a fairly constant internal body temperature -- through physiological and behavioural mechanisms, regardless of the surrounding temperature; the chapter notes that all birds and mammals are capable of this kind of thermoregulation. Step 2. Ectotherms/Conformers: most other animals and all plants cannot maintain a constant internal state this way, so their body temperature simply changes along with the ambient (surrounding) temperature -- these are called conformers.
