Desert animals face the challenge of extreme temperature and scarce water, so many rely on behavioural adaptations to manage their body temperature: desert lizards, for instance, bask in the sun when their body temperature is low, then move into shade once ambient temperature climbs too high, keeping their body temperature fairly constant purely through behaviour. Step 2. Some desert species burrow into sand to hide from and escape the worst daytime heat, effectively creating a cooler, more stable microhabitat for themselves. Step 3. Mammals native to colder desert or high-altitude conditions show a morphological adaptation, Allen's Rule -- shorter snouts, ears, tails and limbs -- which minimises the surface area available for losing body heat.
