The conversion of bare rock into soil is the first step of primary succession on rock (xerosere), and it is driven initially by pioneer organisms that can survive under the extreme, nutrient-poor conditions of exposed rock surfaces. Lichens — a mutualistic symbiotic association between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner (green alga or cyanobacterium) — are typically the first colonizers; they attach to the rock surface and secrete organic (carbonic and other) acids that chemically weather and slowly dissolve the rock, while also trapping wind-blown dust and organic debris, gradually forming a thin layer of proto-soil. As this happens and conditions improve slightly, mosses (bryophytes) establish themselves next, further trapping soil particles, retaining moisture, and adding organic matter as they grow and die, progressively deepening and enriching the developing soil. This soil-building activity of lichens (and subsequently mosses) sets the stage for her …
