Hibernation = winter dormancy (cold survival); aestivation = summer dormancy (heat/drought survival). Desert animals commonly show nocturnal activity and burrowing behaviour.

(a) Hibernation and aestivation are both forms of dormancy that animals use to survive periods of environmental extremes when normal activity would be too costly or impossible. Hibernation is 'winter sleep' — a state of significantly lowered metabolic rate, body temperature and activity that certain animals (e.g., bears, some rodents, bats) enter during the cold winter months, when food is scarce and temperatures are too low for normal activity, allowing them to conserve energy until favourable conditions return in spring. Aestivation, in contrast, is 'summer sleep' — a similar state of metabolic depression and dormancy that certain animals (e.g., snails, lungfish, some frogs and reptiles) enter during the hot, dry summer months to avoid excessive heat and desiccation (water loss), resuming normal activity when cooler, wetter conditions return. …
