Michael Faraday was the first person to explain electrolysis nearly 200 years ago.

An electrolytic cell consists of a container in which an electrolyte is placed. Two electrodes are immersed in the electrolyte and connected to a source of direct current.

At the anode (+) a species oxidises with the removal of electrons. These electrons are pulled from the anode and pushed to the cathode through an external circuit. The electrons are supplied to the species at the cathode, which are reduced.
