Degree of dissociation (α)

3.2.3

Degree of dissociation (α)

The degree of dissociation of an electrolyte is defined as a fraction of the total number of moles of the electrolyte that dissociates into its ions when the equilibrium is attained. It is denoted by the symbol α\alpha and given by

α=number of moles dissociatedtotal number of moles...(3.1)\alpha = \frac{\text{number of moles dissociated}}{\text{total number of moles}} \qquad \text{...(3.1)}

Percent dissociation=α×100...(3.2)\text{Percent dissociation} = \alpha \times 100 \qquad \text{...(3.2)}

If cc is the molar concentration of an electrolyte, the equilibrium concentration of the cation or the anion is (α×c) mol dm−3(\alpha \times c)\ \mathrm{mol\,dm^{-3}}. …
