The large reserves of CH3COOHCH_3COOH and CH3COO−CH_3COO^- neutralise added OH−OH^-/H+H^+ respectively, keeping pH nearly constant.

The sodium acetate–acetic acid buffer contains a weak acid, CH3COOHCH_3COOH (only slightly dissociated), together with its salt, CH3COONaCH_3COONa (fully dissociated, providing a large reservoir of the common ion CH3COO−CH_3COO^-):

CH3COOH⇌CH3COO−+H+CH_3COOH \rightleftharpoons CH_3COO^- + H^+

CH3COONa→CH3COO−+Na+CH_3COONa \rightarrow CH_3COO^- + Na^+

On adding a small amount of acid (H+H^+): the added H+H^+ combines with the abundant CH3COO−CH_3COO^- to form more undissociated CH3COOHCH_3COOH (equilibrium shifts left), so [H+][H^+] in solution barely rises.

On adding a small amount of base (OH−OH^-): the OH−OH^- is neutralised by the large reserve of CH3COOHCH_3COOH, forming CH3COO−CH_3COO^- and water, so [OH−][OH^-] barely rises.
