Number of particles and unit cells in x g of metallic crystal

Combining the density relation (Eq. 1.4) with Avogadro's number lets us count the particles -- and the unit cells -- present in any given mass of a metallic crystal.

• Number of particles in 'xx' g metal : The molar mass MM contains NAN_A particles, so xx g of metal contains x NAM\dfrac{x\,N_A}{M} particles. From Eq. (1.4), M=ρ a3NAnM = \dfrac{\rho\,a^3 N_A}{n}; substituting,

number of particles in x g=x NA nρ a3 NA=x nρ a3\text{number of particles in } x \text{ g} = \frac{x\,N_A\,n}{\rho\,a^3\,N_A} = \frac{x\,n}{\rho\,a^3}

• Number of unit cells in 'xx' g metal : Each unit cell contains nn particles, so …
