The centriole's cartwheel appearance comes from nine peripheral triplet fibrils connected by radial spokes to a central hub, with no central tubules at all.

A centrosome typically contains two cylindrical centrioles, set perpendicular to each other and surrounded by an amorphous pericentriolar material. Looking at the internal organisation of a single centriole reveals a pattern that closely resembles a cartwheel.

The wall of the centriole is built from nine evenly spaced peripheral fibrils, each made of the protein tubulin. A key detail is that each of these nine fibrils is actually a triplet — three tubules bundled together — and adjacent triplets are linked to one another around the circumference. At the centre of the structure's proximal region lies a proteinaceous hub, and from this hub, radial spokes made of protein reach outward to connect with the peripheral triplets, completing the wheel-like appearance. …
