Across the lanthanoid series, atomic/ionic radii decrease steadily due to poor shielding by 4f electrons; this has knock-on effects on the sizes of heavier transition elements and on lanthanoid basicity.

As we move across the lanthanoid series (La, Z=57, to Lu, Z=71), one 4f electron is added at each step along with one proton in the nucleus. The 4f orbitals are diffuse and shield the outer electrons from the increasing nuclear charge very poorly (imperfect/poor shielding), so the effective nuclear charge felt by the outer electrons increases steadily across the series. This pulls the outer electron shells progressively closer to the nucleus, causing a slow but steady contraction in atomic and ionic radii from La3+ to Lu3+. This overall shrinkage is called the lanthanoid contraction.
