Lanthanide contraction is the regular, cumulative decrease in the size of lanthanide atoms/ions from La to Lu, caused by imperfect shielding of the 4f electrons; it explains why elements just after the lanthanides (like Hf, Ta) closely resemble their 4d homologues (Zr, Nb).

Causes:

As we move across the lanthanide series (atomic number 58 to 71), electrons are added to the inner 4f subshell while the nuclear charge also steadily increases. The 4f orbitals are diffuse and do not shield the outer (5s, 5p, 6s) electrons from the increasing nuclear charge very effectively (poor shielding of one 4f electron by another). So the effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons increases steadily across the series, pulling them progressively closer to the nucleus. This cumulative, steady decrease in atomic/ionic radius across the 14 lanthanides is called the lanthanide contraction.

Consequences:

  1. Similar radii of second and third transition series: The contraction almost exactly compensates for the expected increase in size on descending a group, so elements like Zr (4d) and Hf (5d), or Nb and Ta, have almost identical atomic/ionic radii. This makes their chemical properties very similar and their separation from each other extremely difficult. …
