Lanthanide contraction is the regular size decrease across the 4f series; it makes Zr/Hf similar and lanthanides hard to separate.

As we move across the lanthanide series (Ce to Lu), each successive element adds one proton and one electron to the inner 4f subshell. The 4f electrons have a diffuse, poorly directed shape and shield the outer electrons from the nucleus very poorly. As a result the effective nuclear charge felt by the outer electrons increases steadily, and the atomic and ionic radii decrease gradually from one element to the next. This steady decrease in size is called the lanthanide contraction.

Two important consequences:

  1. Similarity of the second and third transition series: the contraction almost cancels the expected increase in size going down from the 4d to the 5d series, so pairs such as Zr and Hf, or Nb and Ta, have nearly identical sizes and very similar chemical properties (and occur together, hard to separate). …
