The test to apply. Data is unstructured when it follows no pre-defined format or model: you cannot naturally break it into fixed fields (columns) and records (rows), and a computer cannot directly search it by field the way it queries a database table. (Contrast: a marks register = structured; an HTML page with tags = semi-structured.)
More examples of unstructured data
| Kind | Everyday examples |
|---|---|
| Images | Family photographs, memes, scanned certificates, paintings |
| Video | Movie/YouTube clips, CCTV surveillance footage, recorded lectures |
| Audio | Songs, podcasts, voice notes, recorded phone calls |
| Free text | Letters, essays and stories; the body of e-mails; WhatsApp/chat messages; social-media posts, comments and reviews; news articles |
| Scientific/medical | X-ray, MRI, CT and ultrasound images; satellite imagery, weather-radar pictures |
| Handwritten material | Class notes, answer sheets, doctors' prescriptions |
Each passes the test: a photograph or a voice note has no "columns"; an essay's meaning is spread through free-flowing sentences, not fields. …
