Step 1. Some cells exit G1 and enter a quiescent, non-proliferating stage called G0, in which they remain metabolically active but do not divide.

Step 2. The decision to enter G0 is made at the restriction point checkpoint at the end of G1, which determines whether a cell continues in the cycle and divides, or withdraws into G0 (as a quiescent or terminally specified cell), or dies.

Step 3. Cells are commonly driven into G0 by nutrient deprivation, lack of growth factors, or density-dependent inhibition; in G0, RNA and protein synthesis occur at a reduced rate compared with a cycling cell.

Step 4. G0 is not necessarily permanent - many cells can re-enter the cycle when appropriate growth factors or extracellular signals appear later, so G0 cells are described as quiescent rather than dormant; however, mature neurons and skeletal muscle cells remain permanently in G0. …
