G0 is a quiescent (resting) stage that non-dividing cells enter after G1; the cell remains alive and metabolically active but exits the active cell cycle unless triggered to re-enter it.

Not all the cells in a multicellular organism divide continuously; many differentiated, specialised cells stop dividing once they have matured. Such cells exit the active cell cycle at the end of the G1 phase and enter an inactive stage called the G0 phase (quiescent phase), instead of proceeding to the S phase.

Key points about the G0 phase:

  1. Cells in G0 are metabolically active — they continue to carry out their normal physiological functions — but they do not prepare for or undergo DNA replication or division.

  2. G0 is generally considered a stable, extended resting state; some cells remain in G0 permanently (e.g., most mature neurons and cardiac muscle cells, which have lost the ability to divide), while others remain there only temporarily.
