G0 is a 'quiescent' resting stage outside the active cell cycle, where cells remain alive and functional but stop dividing.

Not every cell in a multicellular organism keeps cycling continuously. After completing mitosis, a cell has a choice at the G1 checkpoint: it can either proceed into S phase to begin another round of division, or it can exit the active cycle altogether and enter a distinct resting state called the G0 phase (also called the quiescent stage).

Key features of G0:

  • Cells in G0 are still alive and metabolically active — they carry out their normal physiological functions, synthesise proteins, and respond to signals — but they do not replicate their DNA or divide.
  • Many highly differentiated, specialised cells remain permanently (or for very long periods) in G0 once they have completed their development, because their specialised role does not require further division — classic examples include mature neurons, and, in animals, cells like cardiac muscle cells. …
