An ovule consists of a nucellus (containing the embryo sac) surrounded by one or two protective layers called integuments. The integuments do not completely enclose the nucellus - they leave a small apical opening called the MICROPYLE. In the most common mode of fertilization (porogamy), the pollen tube grows through the style, enters the ovule via the micropyle, and releases its two male gametes into the embryo sac. After fertilization, the micropyle often persists in the mature seed as a tiny pore through which water enters during germination.
