Floral morphology uses precise technical terms to describe the condition of stamens (the androecium):
(a) A sterile stamen: Normally, each stamen consists of a filament and an anther that produces pollen. In some flowers, one or more stamens fail to produce pollen — either they lack an anther altogether, or the anther is non-functional. Such a non-functional, sterile stamen is called a staminode. Staminodes may still play a role in the flower, such as attracting pollinators or acting as a nectar guide, even though they do not produce viable pollen (e.g., seen in Canna, some Scrophulariaceae members).
