Pneumatophores are upward-growing "breathing roots" found in mangrove and other swamp plants, adapted to absorb oxygen where the waterlogged soil itself is deficient in it.

Plants growing in marshy, waterlogged, saline habitats (like mangroves along the coast) face a problem: the soil is so saturated with water that very little oxygen can diffuse into it, starving the underground roots of the oxygen they need for respiration. To overcome this, some roots modify into PNEUMATOPHORES: they grow vertically upward from the underground root system, projecting above the mud or water surface into the air.
