Monopodial branching has one continuously growing main axis with side branches, while sympodial branching has a main axis that is really a chain of successive lateral branches, each taking over after the previous growing tip stops.

Monopodial branching: The apical (terminal) bud of the main stem remains active and continues to grow indefinitely throughout the life of the plant, producing a single, straight, dominant main axis. Lateral (axillary) branches arise from buds along the sides of this main axis, but they never overtake or replace the growth of the main apical bud, so the main stem retains a clear, continuous central trunk. Examples: Casuarina, Polyalthia (Ashoka tree), most conifers.
