Insectivorous (carnivorous) angiosperms are photosynthetic plants that additionally trap and digest small insects using leaves modified into pitchers, sticky traps, snap-traps, or bladders, allowing them to obtain extra nitrogen and minerals in nutrient-deficient soils.

Certain flowering plants grow in habitats where the soil is deficient in nitrogen and other minerals (such as marshy, boggy, or acidic soils). To supplement their mineral nutrition, these plants have evolved leaves modified into insect-trapping structures, in addition to carrying out normal photosynthesis (they are NOT dependent on insects for carbon/energy, only for extra nitrogen/minerals) — such plants are called insectivorous or carnivorous plants.

Common examples and their trapping mechanisms:

  1. Nepenthes (pitcher plant) — the leaf apex is modified into a pitcher-shaped structure with a lid; insects are attracted inside, slip on the smooth waxy inner walls, and fall into a pool of digestive fluid at the base, secreted by glands lining the pitcher, where they are digested and their nutrients absorbed.

  2. Drosera (sundew) — the leaf surface bears numerous glandular, tentacle-like hairs that secrete sticky mucilage droplets; insects landing on the leaf get stuck, and the surrounding tentacles slowly curl inward to trap and digest the prey.

  3. Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap) — the leaf lamina is modified into two hinged lobes bearing sensitive trigger hairs; when an insect touches these hairs, the two lobes snap shut rapidly, trapping the insect, which is then digested by enzymes secreted by glands on the leaf surface.
