Q.Define the following
Step 1. Bond order. In simple Lewis-theory terms, bond order is the number of electron pairs shared between two bonded atoms — 1 for a single bond, 2 for a double bond, 3 for a triple bond. (Molecular orbital theory generalises this to , which can give fractional values.)
Step 2. Hybridisation. Hybridisation is the process of mixing atomic orbitals of the SAME atom, of comparable energy, to form an equal number of new, equivalent hybrid orbitals of identical energy, oriented with maximum symmetry to minimise repulsion between their electrons (e.g. one 2s + three 2p orbitals of carbon mixing into four sp³ hybrid orbitals).
Step 3. σ-bond (sigma bond). A sigma bond is a covalent bond formed by HEAD-ON (axial) overlap of two atomic orbitals, directly along the line joining the two nuclei. It is always the result when an s orbital is involved in the overlap, and is the type of overlap present in every single bond.
Bond order, hybridisation and σ-bond are defined below.
