(i) Oxygen in H2O2 has oxidation number -1 (peroxide linkage). (ii) The de-Broglie wavelength equation is λ = h/(mv).

(i) Oxidation number of oxygen in H2O2:

Let the oxidation number of O be x. Hydrogen has oxidation number +1 in H2O2 (as usual), and the molecule is neutral overall:

2(+1) + 2(x) = 0

2 + 2x = 0

x = -1

This unusual value (oxygen is normally -2) arises because H2O2 contains a peroxide (-O-O-) linkage, in which each oxygen atom is bonded to the other oxygen as well as to one hydrogen; sharing the O-O bond equally (since both atoms are identical) leaves each oxygen with an oxidation number of -1 rather than the usual -2.

(ii) De-Broglie equation:

Louis de Broglie proposed that every moving particle (not just light) has an associated wavelength, given by:

λ = h / (mv) = h / p …
