The Principal Quantum Number n identifies the main electron shell (K, L, M, N, ...), governing orbital size, energy, and the maximum number of electrons (2n^2) the shell can hold.

The Principal Quantum Number, denoted n, is one of the four quantum numbers used to describe the state of an electron in an atom. It was introduced in Bohr's atomic model and retained in the quantum mechanical model.

Key features:

  1. Values: n can take positive integer values 1, 2, 3, 4, ... (up to infinity in principle), corresponding to shells labelled K, L, M, N, ... respectively.
  2. Physical meaning: n indicates the main energy level (shell) in which an electron is found, and broadly determines the electron's average distance from the nucleus -- larger n means the electron is, on average, farther from the nucleus and at higher energy.
  3. Number of orbitals: each shell with principal quantum number n contains n^2 orbitals (e.g., n=1 gives 1 orbital, n=2 gives 4 orbitals, n=3 gives 9 orbitals). …
