A subshell has (2l+1) orbitals and each orbital holds at most 2 electrons, so its maximum electron capacity is 2(2l+1) = 4l+2.

For a given subshell (s, p, d, f, ...) with azimuthal quantum number l, the magnetic quantum number m can take any integer value from -l to +l, giving (2l+1) possible values. Each distinct value of m corresponds to one orbital of that subshell (e.g. l=1, the p subshell, has m = -1, 0, +1, i.e. 3 orbitals: px, py, pz).

By the Pauli exclusion principle, no two electrons in an atom can have the same set of all four quantum numbers, which restricts each orbital to a maximum of 2 electrons (with opposite spins, ms = +1/2 and -1/2).
