Raoult's law gives the relative lowering of vapour pressure as equal to the mole fraction of solute; for a dilute solution this simplifies to a formula directly relating the molar mass of the solute to the known masses of solute and solvent and the measured vapour pressures.

For a dilute solution of a non-volatile, non-electrolyte solute in a volatile solvent, Raoult's law gives:

(p0 - p) / p0 = x2

where p0 is the vapour pressure of the pure solvent, p is the vapour pressure of the solution, and x2 is the mole fraction of the solute.

For a dilute solution, x2 ≈ n2 / n1 (since n2 << n1, where n1 = moles of solvent, n2 = moles of solute):

(p0 - p) / p0 = n2 / n1 = (w2/M2) / (w1/M1)
