Two solutions are called isotonic when they have identical osmotic pressures at a given temperature; when separated by a semipermeable membrane, they show no net movement of solvent in either direction.

Osmotic pressure (π) is a colligative property, given by π = CRT (for dilute solutions), where C is the molar concentration of the solute particles, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature.

Isotonic solutions are defined as two solutions that produce the same osmotic pressure at the same temperature — this can happen even if the solutions contain different solutes at different molar concentrations, as long as their C (particle concentration) × T product matches, giving equal π.
