Step 1. A messenger, by definition, carries information from a sender to a receiver. Hormones fit this role because they are chemical substances (amines, peptides or steroids) secreted by an endocrine gland (the 'sender') directly into the blood.

Step 2. Once in the blood, a hormone circulates throughout the entire body, but it produces its effect only in specific target organs or tissues carrying matching receptors (the 'receiver'), just as a messenger's message only makes sense to its intended recipient.
