The thymus gland is the primary lymphoid organ where T-lymphocytes mature, making it central to the body's immune system.

The thymus is a bilobed gland situated in the thoracic cavity, below the thyroid and above the heart. It is large and active in children but shrinks (involutes) in adults.

It secretes hormones called thymosins, which promote the differentiation and maturation of T-lymphocytes (T-cells) — the white blood cells responsible for cell-mediated immunity. A well-developed thymus is essential for the proper development of the body's immune response.
