Bioluminescence is the well-marked, defining feature of Phylum Ctenophora (comb jellies / sea walnuts). Examples include Pleurobrachia and Ctenoplana. This answers part (a) of the either/or question.

  1. Phylum showing bioluminescence: Ctenophora. The property of a living organism producing and emitting light (bioluminescence) is treated as the characteristic, well-marked feature of this phylum in the syllabus.
  2. Description with examples:
  • Ctenophores are exclusively marine, radially (biradially) symmetrical, diploblastic animals with tissue-level organisation. The body bears eight external rows of ciliated comb plates (ctenes) that are used for locomotion — the only phylum to use cilia for this on such a scale.
  • Digestion is both extracellular and intracellular. The animals are hermaphrodite (sexes not separate); reproduction is only sexual, with external fertilisation and indirect development through a larval stage.
  • Bioluminescence is well marked in the group, the light being produced by a biochemical reaction within the animal's own tissues. …
