Male frogs can usually be distinguished from females by the presence of a vocal sac and a nuptial (copulatory) pad, and by their generally smaller body size.

Several external features distinguish male and female frogs, most obviously during the breeding season. The male frog typically possesses a vocal sac (or a pair of vocal sacs, depending on species), an elastic membrane of skin near the throat that can be inflated with air and used to amplify croaking calls used to attract females. The male also develops a rough, thickened patch of skin called the nuptial pad (copulatory pad) on the first digit (thumb) of the forelimb during the breeding season; this pad helps the male grip the female firmly during amplexus (the mating clasp). Male frogs are also generally smaller in body size than females of the same species. The female frog, in contrast, lacks a vocal sac and a nuptial pad, is usually larger in body size, and during the breeding season her abdomen appears visibly distended due to the large number of egg …
