Cockroaches are considered pests because they contaminate food, damage household articles, and act as carriers/vectors of disease-causing microorganisms, while breeding rapidly in unsanitary conditions.

A cockroach is labelled a pest for several practical, harmful reasons:

  1. Food contamination — cockroaches feed on stored grains and food items at night and leave behind droppings, regurgitated fluid, and a characteristic foul (musty) odour from glands, spoiling food and making it unfit for consumption.

  2. Damage to household articles — they gnaw on and damage clothes, books, paper, bindings, and leather goods, particularly items with starch-based glue or natural fibres.

  3. Disease transmission — cockroaches move freely between unhygienic places such as drains, sewers, garbage, and toilets, and then walk over food and utensils, mechanically carrying pathogenic bacteria (such as Salmonella, Shigella, and Vibrio cholerae, which cause food poisoning, dysentery, and cholera respectively) as well as the eggs of parasitic worms on their legs and bodies, transferring them to food and surfaces.

  4. Allergies — proteins in cockroach droppings, saliva, and shed body parts are known allergens that can trigger asthma and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, especially in homes with heavy infestations.
